How much do you remember, for what happened in the past 20 years?

I remember the pre-97 migration rush. I remember my HKCEE. I remember the millennium doomsday and millennium worm. I remember the dissection of the alien, gay movement, suicide of school kids, Kowloon walled city, Nokia 8310, Stephen Chow, Bruce Lee. I remember the eviction of rooftop housing in the 90s. I remember the eviction of Tsoi Yuen Village in 2011.

A roll-call of Gold Award-winning titles in the past two decades, the retrospective series departs from the social, familial and individual perspective, battles mainstream values with humanity. With complex themes and experimental forms, these shorts not only witness the changes of the city, but also reflect the life and desire of the people. Be it loud and sound or murmurs, they are all the most unofficial historical discourse.

In 1994, the Hong Kong government suddenly launched an initiative to tear down "rooftop dwellings", even though it had actually accepted their existance for many years. The Housing Authority regarded them as private property and denied owners the opportunity to apply for public housing. Now the government has ordered these 40,000 dwellings to be removed, without offering fair resettlement terms for the residents who had moved in after 1982. Video Power recorded the negotiations before some of these houses were torn down in Mongkok.

A and B competed in mushroom-growing, which drew a large audience. A girl started distributing flowers to the crowd, so people would know that other than mushrooms, there were also flowers to contemplate. What she did anger A and B, who drove the girl away in joint effort and then led the mass in growing mushrooms. The mushrooms grew and grew until it covered the sky completely, making the world a dark place. Only then did the mass realize that they had made a mistake too grave to correct.

The story took place on 3 September 2002, when the rice distribution of Yu Lan Festival was held in the football field of Tsz Wan Shan. Over 8,200 persons made up the queue. Most of them are the aged; some are the disabled. The event started at nine in the morning till six in the evening. Most of the participants arrived at four at dawn. Over a hundred cops were on duty to maintain order.

I remember the eviction of Tsoi Yuen Village in 2011.

A roll-call of Gold Award-winning titles in the past two decades, the retrospective series departs from the social, familial and individual perspective, battles mainstream values with humanity. With complex themes and experimental forms, these shorts not only witness the changes of the city, but also reflect the life and desire of the people. The media who discloses someone’s privacy will be condemned, but how are we going to deal with the matter if someone chooses to expose his or her own privacy? Wong, a young author of 25, was alone on her bed at midnight. In her own little secret place, she tried to record all her private life in front of a digital camera. This was an attempt to challenge the norm of morality. Without reservation, Wong presented her secret life to all of us. What was projected on the screen was apparently her morbid state.

“All About Us” is a creative film education project especially for ethnic minority youths in Hong Kong. For the past five years, students have been transforming little stories in their lives into moving images. Two days later, Chun cannot find Fion, he received a call to let him go to another place to find Fion.
