The Mechanics of Shadows, Selva Days
Cedric Maridet
The Mechanics of Shadows, Selva Days simulates in real time the dynamics of population growth between four species in this artificial ecosystem that control the behaviour of four robotised turntables with recordings from the Brazilian rainforest and projections of shadows of the mechanism of each animal/machine.
Artist's Statement
This installation dwells on histories of sound practices with the phonograph as an apparatus that shaped ethnographic, aesthetics and listening practices. With repetitive playback, sonorous brightness and the groove are altered, slowly destroying the records as the needle touches the surface. The document value of the phonographic referent is transformed through the passage of time, and the transfer of causal relation of the sounds to the machine and the projected shadows. A new organology is defined through the dual modes of apprehension of a sonorous event; one that is visual, the other sonorous, in between the intangible and the tangible.
