Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and ifva, the flagship project organized by the Hong Kong Arts Centre, will join hands for the solo exhibition of the 22nd ifva Awards Media Art Category winner Hui Wai Keung. In 2011, Hui Wai Keung participated an artist residency program in Dortmund, since then his artworks are deeply influenced by German art and culture. His award winning work Re-Dürer is a rework of German sculptor Albrecht Dürer’s three well-known engravings. Based on his own interpretations, he hacked a computer game to generate graphics and presented them in a three-channel video installation. The exhibition also showcases his new artworks including Synchronize @ Rock, Anywhere Out of the World, Caught Naked in Silence of Hyperspace and Programming the Nature which illustrate the artist’s visual study in fourth dimension geometry and his uncertainty towards the relationship between mankind and nature.
Hui Wai-Keung was born and lives in Hong Kong. He received his MFA from School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, and graduated in diploma in Fine Art from Hong Kong Art School. Hui has exhibited locally and aboard, including ifva Awards, 404 Electronic Art Festival, and Milan Triennale. He is also active in artist-in-residency programs that held in Europe and Asia, including ARCUS Project in Japan.
Have attempted various art forms, Hui Wai-Keung is now focusing on digital media, such as software, game or generative art. Hui is exploring the alternative possibility of art, with a view to expand the horizon of human concepts and experience; but he still treasures the traditional aesthetic values. He believes it is time for art to go back to sublime, but a new definition of sublime.
