Tong yuen (glutinous rice balls) means reunion to grandma, which also represents the memories of her reunion with her father when she was young. Her granddaughter knows that grandma has to give up all sweet cuisine because of diabetes, so she makes her lightly sweetened tong yuen to enjoy the real taste of reunion.
Artist’s Statement
Elders wish their family to be by their side, while young people want to hang out with their peers. Due to misunderstandings, generation gaps appear. Reunion is a story about a diabetic granny and her granddaughter making sweet dumplings, which brings out the issue of inter-generational relationships.
