Media of Langue is a dictionary/sculpture that depicts the map of meaning onto the boundary between languages. On the Internet, words of multiple languages float as dots. There two forces are given: repulsion between words in the same language, and attraction between translated words in different languages. These two forces immediately constitute a certain space, and the visitors can explore there.
Artist's Statement
This dictionary, which depicts the map of meaning on the boundary between languages, is a new dictionary beyond the existing categories of dictionaries, and consulting this dictionary is an aesthetic act that each time touches on the possibilities/impossibilities of communication or the universality/diversity of humanity, and the hope/despair of the Tower of Babel.
Juror's Comment
The artwork adopts a similar presentation with the Visual Thesaurus to construct a beautiful visualisation of translation between two languages. The self-organising ability of the virtual sculpture is driven by the attraction and repulsion between words of both languages. The work can both function as a visualisation tool and a standalone piece of software based artwork. (Chung Wai Ching Bryan)
