O/S

Hong Kong︳5’00”︳with No Dialogue and No Subtitles
Taking inspiration from 20th-century avant-garde experiments in graphical sound generation, the entire image in O/S functions as an optical soundtrack. Abstract motion becomes sound. What you hear is what you see.
Artist's Statement
Inspired by early 20th century avant-garde graphical sound experiments, O/S explores digital approaches to the analogue technique of optical audio. In contrast to drawing on a celluloid film strip's optical soundtrack, the entire image is a soundtrack: everything you see generates sound. What you hear is what you see. By designing specific visual shapes and movements, all tones in O/S have been composed visually. The challenge was to create a film that balances visual and sonic expression to create a synaesthetic experience for the viewer: a work that is created visually but also sounds interesting.

Juror's Comment
O/S is an abstract animation in the tradition of early pioneers of abstract electronic animation such as John Whitney or Larry Cuba. Its visual elements are kept to a minimum; black and white dots and lines. Nevertheless, it is an exciting, welledited, clean, and strong artistic animation. (Tamás Waliczky)
