This is the Man Fu

Tse Nga-in

Col / 29’49” / In Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles

“To create is a tool for self-recovery”, a saying that I learnt when I was at university. Picking up my DV for the first time, I shot my father who was never at home. The crappy work was titled “Family”. I looked back at the clips two years ago, just about to find that my wounds were never healed. Father had an accident in July 2015, which led to This is the Man Fu.

This is the Man Fu originated from an assignment five years go. I began to understand my father again two years ago. We interacted more frequently, and I kept saying I would want to shoot him but never made it happen in the name of different excuses: no technique, no equipment, let’s leave it later… until he collapsed in a faint. Shooting this film with unprofessional techniques and shaky camera work, I felt strangely relieved upon its completion. The film is the best gift for Man Fu, although a bit late.
