Artist’s Statement

The inspiration for this story came with my visit to Yanbian in 2017. My cinematographer, A’Guang, captured a shot of me under a decaying canopy. It was a scene where I quietly watched a few elders play Mahjong, who chatted in Korean from time to time. There was something very harmonious about it, with a sense of quietness unique to borders. Villages by the China-North Korea border next to Yanbian had become empty, with most young people having left to work in South Korea and elders as the remaining few of their residents. Thus I imagined that there was a young man in Yanbian, who, for some reason, had not been able to leave his village and spent his days wandering in the border village. What his lifeworld would be like?
