| In short film, anything is possible: formally, content-wise, or aesthetically. Hard to pin down, extremely open – and for that reason endlenssly fascinating – short film remains an inexhaustible reservoir from which cinema, television, Internet and even the museum cull new visual languages. Founded in 1954, the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen is one of the oldest short film festivals in the world. In the course of more than five decades, the Festival has become one of the world’s most respected and major international platforms for short films, unique in the range of forms and genres it presents to the public, and particularly well known for its spotlight on experiments. | ||||

The festival is looking for new, surprising and idiosyncratic short films for the competitions in its 59th edition. Traditionally the festival has been most interested in experiments works that challenge forms of narrative or documentary. You now have the golden opportunity to show and present your work to the festival director – Lars Henrik Gass! Ranging from non-narrative, animation, avant-garde, experimental documentary and music video, the compilation of the latest award-winning works brings local audience a rare and refreshing cinematic experience. Following the screening, a dialogue between Lars Henrik Gass, the Festival Director of International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, and Dr Linda Lai (Associate Professor, School of Creative Media) will round out the day event. A film about the memories of wood, trees and people. Documentary III: Slot Machine / Wu Chang-Jung / Taiwan / 2010 / color / 3′ (German Festival Premiere in the International Competition of the Oberhausen Festival 2012, Price of the Jury of the Ministry for Family, Children, Culture, Youth and Sport of North Rhine-Westphalia) A record of an important aspect of my work at the pigsty – the mating and breeding of pigs. Shifted Horizon / Seoungho Cho / USA / 2009 / color / 6′ (Festival World Premiere in the International Competition of the Oberhausen Festival 2010) A landscape of mountainous islands, recorded from a wave-tossed boat, is infused with the bobbing motions of the camera. In an effort to override the ever-shifting horizon, Cho splits the image into bands, each showing different vantages on the scene: the bluish outline of the islands, interspersed with views of the water’s surface, golden sunlight. Three Notes /Jeanette Gaussi / Germany / 2006 / color / 4’ (Festival World Premiere in the German Competition of the Oberhausen Festival 2007, the Best Contribution to the German Competition, ex aequo) Twenty pictures have remained as the only evidence of my early childhood’s home – evidence of an almost forgotten home. Why did he disappear? And where? And who is Carl anyway? A reconstruction of a life told from 13 point of views. A confrontation with a personal tragedy.
