The 16th Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards Call for entry from 18 August
Total Prizes up to HK$1M + overseas festivals visit

Organised by the Hong Kong Arts Centre and sponsored by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the 16th Hong Kong Independent Short Film & Video Awards (ifva) enrolment will start from Wednesday, 18 August 2010. The competition consists of 5 individual categories which include Open Category, Youth Category, Animation Category, Interactive Media Category and Asian New Force Category.

This year, prizes for ifva award recipients hit a record high which worth a total of HK$1M, plus additional sponsorship for winners to participate in festivals overseas. Gold Award, Silver Award and Special Mention will be selected respectively in Open Category, Youth Category, Animation Category and Interactive Media Category which open for local candidates to apply.  Cash prize of HK$100,000, a double of last edition, will be awarded for Gold Award recipient in Open Category. As well as receiving cash prize with a trophy, each of the Gold Award winners in Animation and Interactive Media Category will also receive additional sponsorship of air fare and accommodation which enables them to visit overseas film festival or art festival.  ifva not only reflects an ongoing commitment to advancing the careers of local inventive media creators, but also identifies itself to strengthen the cooperation with the next generation of media creators in Asia. This year ifva will continue to support the 10 finalists in Asian New Force Category to visit Hong Kong to develop their professional expertise with local master practitioners in March 2011.

Since 1995, ifva has established a tradition of promoting excellence in media creation to the community on the objective of “Building Up Independent Spirit and Creative Community” through its multi-disciplinary programs all the year around. On 18 August, the 16th ifva will launch its first program “Art Node x ifva”, a live webcast at Hong Kong Art School from 7:30pm to 9pm. Art node is a unique online art learning platform which made possible with the Quality Enhancement Grant Scheme supported by the Education Bureau in Hong Kong. This time, “Art Node x ifva” brings focus to the development of ifva. Three esteemed ifva alumni including IP Yuk-yiu, experienced film and media practitioner cum curator/Associate Professor of City University of Hong Kong School of Creative Media; Yan-yan MAK, active TV production and film maker, and John CHAN who established the popular Postgal Animations Collection, together with Teresa KWONG, the Director of ifva, will be invited to share their experiences in media creation. To allow the media to get an insight in ifva, we would like to invite you to join the live webcast.

This year’s Selection Committee is a rich mix of experts in a range of disciplines including Ann HUI, a prominent filmmaker; SHEK Kei, a renowned film critics; Heiward MAK, an emerging female director; Kit HUNG, whose film “Soundless Wind Chime” selected by the 59th Berlin International Film Festival; YUEN Kin-to, director of “My Life as McDull” and “CJ7 The Cartoon”, and Gabriel PANG, a recognised pioneer in the field of games design who is also the Managing Director of Firedog Computer Entertainment Limited (a.k.a. Firedog) etc.
