As we walk along the path of life, it is inevitable to face
challenges and change. The ifva (Open Category) Finalist Showcase
(Programme 1) is presenting some inspiring stories about people's
lifelong pursuits.
Chinese Opera Boy (WONG Yuen-yin, Clara/ 23' 46''/ in
Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles) is about a high school
student who chooses to be an apprentice of a Chinese opera maestro
instead of studying in England. Before learning how to sing, he needs to
learn a life lesson. Life Goes On (CHUI Sin-man/ 30'/ in Cantonese with
Chinese and English subtitles) and The Life and Times of Ho Chung
Village (TSANG Tsui-Shan/ 14'/ no dialogue with English subtitles)
both address the issue of urban redevelopment. The former discusses
Kwun Tong redevelopment through the eyes of a Form 5 graduate, who
struggles between his personal change and that of the city; the latter by
the winner of the 8th South Taiwan Film Festival attempts to reconstruct
the old landscape of Ho Chung Village in Sai Kung with images and
sound. The Newlywed (LIU Ming-yin, Stanley / 21' 10''/ in Cantonese with
Chinese subtitles) brings us to Tibet to experience how purifying and
spiritual the natural landscape of Tibet can be, and how one can redeem
his bygone years there.
Open Category Programme 2
A school is no doubt a place to learn, and can it be something
more? Here in our Finalist Showcase, the many possibilities of a school is
being explored.
Revolution (CHAN Wai-man/ 15' 40"/ in Cantonese with
Chinese and English subtitles) is no less a spin-off from Johnny To's
Exiled, turning a primary school into a battlefield between teachers and
students. Daylily (CHAN Tsz-wai, Wallis/ 30'/ in Cantonese with Chinese
and English subtitles) depicts a school as the place for friendship to
blossom between three teenage girls who can only share their very
special intimacy during the youthful days. I Can See, I Can't See (TSE Pikshan/
30'/ in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles) questions
whether a school is meant to be harmonious: a schoolboy is ignored by
his family and constantly bullied at school. In documentary Poor Child,
Rich Mind (YU Shung-pong, YU Yat-tung, HUI Chun-yuk, YIU Man-kwan,
Jason, WONG Chun-lam / 19' 17''/ in Cantonese with Chinese subtitles) a
boy hurdles a harsh life with optimism and hope.
Open Category Programme 3
Truth and lies — ifva (Open Category) Finalist Showcase
(Programme 3) seeks to explore the possibility of balancing the two
extremes.
The Betrayed Tigers (LIU Ming-yin, Stanley/ 30'/ in Cantonese
with Chinese and English subtitles) exposes a series of shaky relationships
on a dinning table, with witty depiction of characters in a style similar
to that of Quentin Tarantino. Camera Gun (YIU Man-kwan, Jason/ 23'/ in
Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles) uses the camera and a gun
as metaphors to lay bare truth and lies. The Outsider (8'/ in Cantonese
with English subtitles) by LEE Ka-wai, winner of the 13th ifva (Youth
Category) with Voice in the Darkness , is an inspiring inward quest of her
as a documentary filmmaker in knowing the world and herself. KWOK
Zune's Homecoming (29' 35''/ in Cantonese, English and Tagalog with
Chinese and English subtitles) is the winner of three short film awards
in Mainland China, telling the story of a Filipino maid who has left home
simply because she loves it so much, but unfortunately has no way to
return.
